Essential Makeup Brushes

By Sarah-Jade Thorne

You can have amazing technique and high quality makeup products but if you don’t have the right tools, the end result won’t be as amazing as it could be. I have found that having the right makeup brushes makes the biggest difference in the overall finish of the makeup. So depending on what makeup products you use, check out the brushes below (that I use) that will help you get a perfect finish. Remember that good quality makeup brushes will last for years, mine definitely have :) Please note that these are not all the brushes you could have or use, they are just the most essential ones for the basics. For those of you who are interested in building up a makeup brush collection, I will soon post an article on the brushes I use everyday. You use liquid foundation?

I would recommend the MAC 187 Duo Fibre Brush. This brush will give you a flawless, airbrushed, seamless finish to your foundation.

You use cream blusher?

I would recommend the MAC 187 Duo Fibre Brush. This brush will give you a flawless, airbrushed, seamless finish to your blusher; ultimately giving you a natural looking flush to your cheeks.

You use face powder (pressed/loose)?

I would recommend the MAC 150 Large Powder Brush. This is a soft, natural fibre brush that is perfect for applying face powder. P.S. You can also use the MAC 187 Duo Fibre Brush for your face powder.

You use concealer?

I would recommend the MAC 217 Blending Brush. This brush is my absolute FAVOURITE brush! It is so versatile (as you will see below, you can also use it for eye shadow). My favourite thing about this brush is that it gives you a perfectly blended, seamless look to your concealer.

You use eye shadow (dry/wet)?

I would recommend the MAC 217 Blending Brush. As I said above, this is my absolute FAVOURITE brush! It is so versatile (as you have seen above, you can also use it for concealer). My favourite thing about this brush is that it helps you to get a perfectly blended look with your eye shadows (whether you are using a powder based or cream based eye shadow).

You use powder blusher?

I would recommend the PMU Large Blusher brush. This is a soft, natural fibre brush that is perfect for applying powder blusher. I sometimes even use my MAC 187 Duo Fibre Brush for my powder blusher :)

So, if I could only have one brush in the world, it would be my MAC 217 Blending Brush (because I could always use my fingers for my foundation and cream blusher) and if I was able to choose one more, it would be the MAC 187 Duo Fibre Brush (simply because I can use it pretty much for my foundation, powder and blusher).
Remember:

  • Natural hair brushes are best for powder products (e.g. face powder) as they pick up (grip) and deposit the product better.
  • Synthetic hair brushes are better for wet products (e.g. foundation) because the actual hair fibres won’t absorb the product.
