How To Clean Your Personal Makeup Brushes

 By Sarah-Jade Thorne

For brushes you use to apply powder makeup products; wash about once a month. For brushes you use to apply wet/cream products (e.g. foundation or lipstick brushes); wash after every use. Here are 5 simple steps to ensure proper and gentle cleaning of your makeup brushes.

  1. Holding the brush upside down, by the handle, run warm water over the brush hairs. Holding the brush upside down prevents water from soaking into the ferrule (the metal part that holds the bristles together). If this part of your brush continuously gets wet the hairs will eventually start to fall out. So try not to get the ferrule or handle (if wooden) wet.
  2. Put some baby shampoo into the palm of your hand and, still holding the brush upside down, swirl the brush in the baby shampoo and clean gently.
  3. Repeat step 1 to rinse the shampoo out of the brush.
  4. For natural hair brushes, I like to repeat step 2 with hair conditioner and then rinse off with cold water.
  5. After gently squeezing out the water from your brushes and reshaping them into their original shape, lay them on the edge on a flat surface, with the brush hairs hanging over the edge so they can dry properly.

Once your brushes are completely dry, store them upright in a container, to retain their shape.
