Recommended Foundations

By Sarah-Jade Thorne

All the foundations below are available in South Africa and are listed from the least expensive to the most expensive. I have personally tried each foundation and they are all great depending on your skin type and needs.

1. Rimmel- Lasting Finish Foundation

  • Description: Build-able cover with a dewy finish, long lasting
  • Pros: Inexpensive  – under R100 (ZAR), long lasting
  • Cons: Limited shades available

2. L’oreal – True Match Foundation

  • Description: Light to Medium cover with an almost invisible natural finish
  • Pros: Inexpensive – under R150 (ZAR), extremely natural finish (blends in with skins tone and texture), a good range of shades in warm, cool and neutral tones
  • Cons: Not long-wearing and it doesn’t give enough coverage to mask all imperfections

3. Revlon – Colourstay

  • Description: Medium to full cover, long-lasting, caters for different skin types (comparable with MAC Studio Fix)
  • Pros: Good range of shades, long-wearing, caters for oily, combination and dry skin types
  • Cons: Strong smell and not suitable for ladies wanting a natural finish as it is quite heavy

4. Bourjois

  • Description: Skin treating foundations, all long-wearing with natural finishes. Around R190 (ZAR)
  • Pros: Treats the skin, long-wearing, smells great, looks natural
  • Cons: Limited shades available

*Bourjois is my favourite out of all the ones listed here as I find that it suits my skin and needs perfectly. I just really wish there were more shades but I absolutely love the smell, the natural finish and how it treats and cares for my skin. I figure, if I’m going to wear foundation every day, I may as well use one that is good for  my skin.

5. MAC – Studio Fix Foundation

  • Description: Long-lasting, medium to full cover (comparable with Revlon Colorstay)
  • Pros: Long-lasting, masks most imperfections, huge shade selection
  • Cons: Some ladies break-out with this foundation as it is quite heavy

6. MAC – Select

  • Description: Light to Medium cover
  • Pros: A lighter foundation with a more natural finish than Studio Fix, huge shade selection
  • Cons: Not suited for those needing a lot of coverage or those wanting a long-lasting foundation
