The Apple Shape

Other names for this shape are an upside down triangle or a cone

Definition

Apples have a rounded midsection (stomach area) with slim arms and legs.

Advantages

You are able to develop a well-toned body quite easily through exercise.  Your arms and legs tend to be shapelier than other body shapes and your backs are usually quite strong and defined.

Disadvantages

In order to keep healthy, you HAVE to exercise, as you will tend so store excess weight around your stomach and chest, therefore straining your internal organs.

Tips

You can show off your slender arms and legs by applying some self-tan to them.  Avoid drawing attention to your waist by wearing belts.

What To Wear

To balance out your shape:

  • Wear – Tops and cardigans that are long and flowing (that do not dig in), with sleeves that show off your toned arms and necklines that are open and attention grabbing.  This will draw attention away from your midsection.
  • Do not wear – Detail around your midsection (for example ornate belts), bias-cut clothing (which will enhance a thick waist) and horizontal stripes (which will exaggerate a rounded midsection, rather go for vertical stripes as they are very slimming).
Toning Your Shape
  • Your objective – To work on your arms, legs and back as this will help bring your body into proportion as is will balance out your rounded midsection.
  • Strong points – Upper body exercises are easiest for you as you have slim limbs and a strong back.
  • Weak points– You will find abdominal exercises agonizing.
  • Exercises for you – Brisk walking and running will maintain your slender legs.  Circuit training is also a great cardio workout for you.  You should push yourself for 2 minutes on each machine and then do some stretches, stretching out the muscles you have just used, for another 2 minutes.  Do not ignore abdominal exercises, even though they are torturous, they are vital and so are lower back exercises as these will both help with your rounded midsection.
  • Exercise to avoid – Swimming crawl (freestyle), rather do breaststroke, as this will help you tone your waist and limbs.
Famous Apples
  • Elizabeth Hurley
  • Liv Tyler
  • Natalie Portman
  • Reese Witherspoon
  • Susan Sarandon
  • Winona Ryder
Summary

Apples have a rounded midsection, they are athletic and toned, they have shapely arms and legs and they have nicely defined strong backs.

The Column Shape

Other names for this shape are a ruler, straight or banana.

Definition

Columns are tall and slim with very few curves and they have long graceful arms and legs.

Advantages

Clothes hang best on you and your long slender limbs give you an agile look.  You can also often get away with eating a lot and not putting on any weight, every woman’s dream!

Disadvantages

You may have a flat chest and you may often look boyish and gangly in the wrong clothes.

Tips

If you are tall, you should wear your hair long or in styles that are full of body to avoid a pinhead effect.  You should also avoid stiffly tailored clothes, as this will highlight your lack of curves.

What To Wear

To balance out your shape:

  • Wear – Skinny jeans that fit snug around your bum as this will make you look more curvy, plunging necklines as this will flatter a small bust and flared skirts and dresses as this will help give you a more feminine outline by hiding your narrow hips.
  • Do not wear – Cropped tops or pants (this will make a long body look longer) and baggy or tailored clothes (this will enhance your lack of curves).
Toning Your Shape
  • Your objective – To create curves by working on your shoulders, hips and bum, giving them definition, this in turn will make your waist appear more defined.
  • Strong points – Cardio (aerobic) work is easiest for you as you have a lot of energy.
  • Weak points– You will probably find that working with weights (anaerobic exercise) is a little difficult as you may have under-developed muscles.
  • Exercises for you – Cycling will help to round out your bottom half, adding shape to your hips, bum and thighs therefore giving definition to your waist.  Working with weights is good for you but this must be balanced; never focus only on your bottom or only on your top, you need to work on both together to give your body a balanced shape.  Pilates will also help strengthen and tone your muscles without burning body fat.
  • Exercise to avoid – Excessive cardio (aerobic) exercise (as you do not want to burn fat that your body needs).  20 minutes three times a week is plenty.
Famous Columns
  • Hilary Swank
  • Kiera Knightly
  • Madonna
  • Nicole Kidman

The Hourglass Shape

Another name for this shape is an 8 frame.

Definition

Hourglasses are curvy, and well proportioned. Their hips and breasts are shapely and they have well-defined waists.

Advantages

You have a sexy voluptuous shape that is all in proportion.  You have a defined waist, a full bust and a rounded bottom (hips, bum and thighs).

Disadvantages

When you gain weight, it tends to go straight to your hips and bust, which causes a swamping of your small waist.

Tips

You should wear clothing that shows off your curves.  Exposing a little cleavage and wearing clothes pinched at the waist will enhance your curvy silhouette. You should never wear baggy clothing as this will hide your curves and make you look boxy.

What To Wear

To balance out your shape:

  • Wear – Decorative belts and detailed waistbands as this will highlight your defined waist.  To accentuate your curvy figure, wear hipster jeans that are narrow but flare out at the knees.  Semi-fitted styles also look great as they help show off your sexy curves.
  • Do not wear – Tops with a lot of detail (as this will make you look bigger at the top), baggy clothing and chunky fabrics (as this will make your look boxy) and A-line skirts and tunic tops (as this will hide your defined waist).
Toning Your Shape
  • Your objective – Work on keeping your bottom toned and amplifying your defined waist.
  • Strong points – Anaerobic exercises (working with weights) are easy for you as both your top and bottom body is strong.
  • Weak points– Aerobic (cardio) exercises will be difficult for you.
  • Exercises for you – Aerobic (cardio) exercises will help you keep in shape (try doing step aerobics or climbing stairs to burn fat and tone your legs). A cardio workout of a minimum of 30 minutes four times a week should be enough if you want to maintain your curvy figure. Yoga will also help you to keep your body toned and in proportion.
  • Exercises to avoid – Doing excessive exercises with weights (anaerobic exercises) will make you bulky.  Rather do more fat burning exercises.

A Pear’s bottom body is rounded where as their top body (bust and shoulders) is small to average in size.

Advantages

Your small top half looks great in strappy tops, you have sexy curves and you can easily disguise your rounded bottom half.

Disadvantages

If you lose weight, it comes off your top and bottom body so you can never really change your overall body shape.

Tips

Draw attention to your top body and not the bottom, therefore wear tops that highlight your petite top body and wear necklaces and earrings to lift the attention off your bottom half.  Do not wear clothes with details around your hips, as this will just accentuate your bigger bottom half.

What To Wear

To balance out your shape:

  • Wear – Slight A-line skirts that are not tight around your hips and thighs, figure-hugging tops that end just below your hips, strappy tops to show off your small top half and wearing darker colours on your bottom half and brighter or lighter colours on your top half will detract attention away from your bottom half.
  • Do not wear – Pants that sit in your waist or higher, pants that are tapered, bold patterns on your bottom body and tops that end in your waist or on your hips.
Toning Your Shape
  • Your objective – Work on your narrow shoulders to balance out your hips.
  • Strong points – Your lower body is strong so running and cycling (which are fat burning exercises) are easier for you.
  • Weak points– Your upper body is quite weak so working on your arms and shoulders will be difficult.
  • Exercises for you – Cardio (aerobic) work at least three times a week, working with weights on your upper body and swimming crawl (freestyle) will help balance out your figure. Horse riding is also a good exercise for toning your lower body without making it bulky.
